Pixel Art VFX in Your Game with an AI Agent

4 min readUpdated 2026-10-31

PixelZ has a free library of pixel art effects for 2D games. You can download them, ask an AI agent to add them to your game, or have the agent make new ones.

Three library effects in a row: water charge, water stream, water prison.

How it works

  • Each effect is one small TypeScript file. It has params (size, speed, count) and a draw function.
  • It runs anywhere. In a JS or TS game it plays live. For Godot, Unity and other engines it becomes a sprite strip.
  • It fits your character. Give it your sprite and the effect takes its size and shape.
  • Same seed, same picture. Change the seed for a new variation.

1. Try it on the site

Open pixelz.io/effects and pick an effect. Try on your sprite shows it on your own character. Download ZIP gives you the .ts file, the small core it needs, and sprite strips with JSON for game engines.

2. Connect your agent

  1. 1

    Claude Code

Run claude mcp add --transport http --scope user pixelz https://api.pixelz.io/mcp. Then type /mcp, pick pixelz and sign in.

  2. 2

    Codex

Run codex mcp add pixelz --url https://api.pixelz.io/mcp, then codex mcp login pixelz.

  3. 3

    Other apps

Cursor, VS Code, claude.ai and more: see pixelz.io/docs/mcp.

The effect tools are free on every plan. You only sign in with your PixelZ account.

3. Ask for an effect

Say which effect, when it plays, and on whom. The agent does the rest: in a JS or TS game it copies the code in, in other engines it renders the strip.

  • Add PixelZ's blood effect when an enemy is shot.
  • Put PixelZ's burn on my player while they stand in lava. Fit it to my sprite.
  • Use PixelZ's water charge, water stream and water prison for the mage's ultimate.

Not quite right? Just say it: make it smaller and slower, fewer drops, try another seed.

4. Make your own with Claude Code

Pick the library effect closest to what you want and tell Claude Code what to change. It reads that effect's code, writes a new effect in your project and runs it there. Nothing runs on our side, so it costs no credits.

  • Get PixelZ's poison effect with its core. Make a holy fire version: gold and white, sparks going up.
  • Start from PixelZ's water prison. Make it a cage of lightning instead of water.
  • Turn PixelZ's black hole into a summoning portal that loops while the boss casts.

Ask for one change at a time. Keep it to 5–8 colours. When an effect looks wrong, it usually has too many colours or too many particles.

Not using TypeScript?

Use the sprite strips from the ZIP. The JSON gives the frame size and an origin point: put it on the character's feet. Put the light strip on an additive layer so it glows.

Try the effects

Play every effect, try it on your own sprite and download it. All free.
