AI in the Editor

The editor's AI panel: create, edit and restyle pixel art right on the canvas, inside an area you select.

The editor's AI panel (the AI tab on the left) draws pixel art with PixelZ Core v1, our own pixel-art model. Create draws from a prompt; Edit changes what you already drew, the way you describe; Style draws something new in the style of a reference sprite. Image generation with other models, animation, effects and 3D have their own pages, starting with Generate.

How it works

Optionally press J (or Select area in the panel) and drag a rectangle on the canvas; without one, the whole canvas is used. Write your prompt, hit Generate, then pick the variants you want — each lands as a new layer, centred on the area at its own pixel size. Right-click a frame, cel or layer in the timeline and choose Use as AI reference to hand it to the panel.

Create

  • Prompt — describe the subject: "a wooden park bench"
  • Type — character, creature, item, food, effect, vehicle, UI, portrait, tile or background. Sprites come cut out on a transparent background; tiles and backgrounds fill the whole picture. With Default, a prompt that names a tile or a background is drawn as one.
  • Reference images — up to 4: an upload, the active cel or frame, or one of your assets
  • Variants — 1 to 4 images in one request

Edit and Style

  • Edit takes the whole frame or the active layer (inside the area, if you marked one) and changes it: "give him a red scarf", "raise the sword". The result lands on a new layer on the same spot.
  • Style takes the first reference image and draws a new sprite in its palette and outline: "a park trash can". The reference should be pixel art at its own size, up to 256 px.

Generation size

Size comes from the area you mark, or the canvas — there's no width/height field. Create draws sprites in any shape up to 160 px a side and up to about 3:1, and tiles and backgrounds as squares; an area it can't draw exactly is shrunk to the closest size it can, and the bar above the prompt shows what you'll get. Style draws squares up to 128 px; Edit keeps the size of what you edit.

Credits

Each plan refreshes credits every 30 days:

  • Free — 9 credits / month
  • Starter — 220 credits / month
  • Pro — 500 credits / month
  • Max — 1,100 credits / month

Each image costs 3 credits on Create, 3 on PixelZ Edit and 3 on PixelZ Style, whatever its size.

Writing good prompts

  • Name the subject and the view: "an old man with a cane, side view facing left"
  • Pick the Type instead of writing it into the prompt
  • Generate 2–4 variants in one request and pick the best one
  • Keep edits to one change at a time

Tip: AI gets you ~80% of a static asset. The last 20% — clean edges, fix stray pixels — is manual cleanup with the pencil and eraser. Fastest for backgrounds, items, props, and single-pose characters.
