Pixel editor

Import a Project

Open existing PixelZ or Aseprite projects in the editor. Round-trips both formats; warnings flag any unsupported features.

Open an existing project file in PixelZ — either your own saved PixelZ project or a file from Aseprite.

Open the dialog

From the menubar, choose File → Import → Import Project. Drop a file onto the dialog, or click to pick one.

Supported formats

  • .pixelz — native PixelZ project file (the format you get from File → Save). Round-trips losslessly.
  • .aseprite — native Aseprite file. Layers, frames, and palette come across; you can edit in PixelZ and export back to .aseprite.
  • .json — older PixelZ exports.

Preview before importing

Files up to 50 MB. PixelZ validates the file and shows a thumbnail, dimensions, layer count, and palette size. If anything Aseprite-specific can't be brought over (some advanced features), you'll see a warning listing what was skipped — the rest still imports cleanly.

Tip: Use Aseprite for what PixelZ hasn't shipped yet (blend modes, layer opacity), then bring the file back into PixelZ when you want to keep editing in the browser. The round-trip is lossless for everything PixelZ supports.

For dropping plain images onto the canvas (PNG, JPEG, WebP), see Drop Images on Canvas.
